Well that's pretty definitive, thanks.

So it looks as if this snoop mode provides a targeted replacement for my mouse 
movement/disk access! I now see a steady stream of interrupts on the hdaudio0 
IRQ23 when OSS is idle and VMIX disabled. But the audio sounds correct!
