Aha, that is the trick :)
I modified the file and the driver builds and inserts fine now. 
Ossdetect -d makes the /dev/oss/ hdaudio device nodes just fine now :)

Using ossplay now gives me output, garbled as it is, but output none the
less ...

In order to reduce the number of active channels and to identify the used
jack I muted/unmuted and replayed the sound file repeatedly.
After a while I received a RIRB error (and no sound) on the play. What does
it stand for and where can I look in the code to debug it ?
