Hi, Sharing a registry-metadata observation that matters for supply-chain incident response. I audited npm's public package documents and found a retention asymmetry.
Each package document has a `time` map (per-version publish stamps) and a `versions` map (the manifests). When a version is removed it disappears from `versions` and direct fetch 404s, but its numeric key usually stays in `time`. So the registry keeps the fact that a version existed and when it died, and drops everything else: no removal timestamp, no reason, no advisory link. Concrete evidence, the September 2025 npm compromise (GHSA-4x49-vf9v-38px / CVE-2025-59144): - 18 affected versions remain orphan keys in `time`, absent from `versions`; all 18 direct fetches return 404. Re-verified against registry.npmjs.org today. - The 18 fall in one publish burst on 2025-09-08, from 13:12:10.343Z (ansi-styles 6.2.2) to 13:20:31.923Z (backslash 0.2.1), 8m21.6s. debug 4.4.2 at 13:12:39Z, chalk 5.6.1 26s later. - Worked example: ansi-styles has 31 numeric `time` keys and 29 `versions` entries; 6.2.2 is a timestamp with no manifest behind it. This is not specific to malicious removals. In a sample of ~1,958 popular packages, ~15% carry a `time` key with no matching version, and the non-advisory cases I checked also 404 with no explanation. The tombstone appears reason-blind by design, not by censorship. Why it matters: a responder or scanner can detect that a version was pulled, but cannot programmatically tell "removed for malware" from "removed by the maintainer for a typo," and cannot join a removed version to its advisory. The data exists at removal time; it just is not retained. Question for the list: is there a documented retention or audit policy for npm registry metadata, and has the reason-blind tombstone been raised as a registry-transparency issue? I have the full 18-row table and a short case file and am glad to share both with anyone working on registry forensics.
