You might be better off using a more similar distribution to create the binary, 
as well.  The ESX 4.0 service console is based on RHEL 5.1...

I'd try compiling in CentOS 5.1.  If you don't mind, tell me how it goes 
offline or whatever.  I'm also interested to see how you get mail working - I 
didn't think the service console included sendmail/postfix/etc.

Hey,

You can tar/untar from another box because the user/init scripts will
be missing.
The best way is to compile on another box and create a binary install:

http://www.ossec.net/wiki/Know_How:BinaryInstall

That way you still run the install.sh to create users, set permissions for you
but it will use the binary compiled from the other system.
