For those of you who want to use this, these are the changes I needed to 
make:
        /srv/www/htdocs/ossec-wui/lib/os_lib_alerts.php line 842:
change:
        fseek($fp, $seek_place, "SEEK_SET");
to:
        fseek($fp, $seek_place, SEEK_SET);
and make sure to set "date.timezone" to your time zone in
/etc/php5/apache2/php.ini.

My system is openSUSE.
