I would need to see some config files. Are you using agent.conf in the
shared folder on the master (with active response enabled in the
ossec.conf file)?
Can you post the ossec.conf and the agent.conf from the agent? I assume
that the ossec.conf files are the same on each of your agents.
attached. syn is the master (OpenBSD snapshot version),
www/mail/helpdesk are the agents, www is a bridged VBox image on mail.
All the agents are CentOS 5.8. This is the OSSEC version running on all
of them, but as I said, anything I tried from 2.6 did the same thing:
https://bitbucket.org/dcid/ossec-hids/changeset/2a20128ca9f4b66905e385ec33d6897c6c5be14c
agent.conf is identical on all of them so I've only attached the master
copy.
the ossec.conf files on agents differ slightly, so I attached them in
full, although I don't think it matters. Other than the different server
IP between them, as I said already, the only difference is the log files
they look at.
another, not that different, set of confs is in the other thread,
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/ossec-list/EaNEC_hz54Q[1-25],
along with some debug messages and this answer from JB:
Looking into the source code remoted/ar-forward.c, "(1310): WARN:
Invalid active response (execd) message" is printed if-and-only-if any
one of the following conditions occurs:
a) cannot find the 'location' field in the message, which is going to be
the 'agent name'
b) cannot find and extract the source IP
c) cannot extract the 'agent id'
Looks like some of your received messages do not have all the needed
information.
JB Cheng
Why would any of those happen, I have no idea.
The problem appears MOSTLY when I restart the master without stopping
the agents first, but not always, sometimes it's fine and sometimes it
goes away after a few restarts. Most of the time, but not always, if I
stop the agents, stop the master, sleep 10 seconds, start master, sleep
7 seconds, start agents, it's going to be fine.
At some point the warning wasn't going away, I had to delete rids as
described here:
http://www.ossec.net/doc/faq/unexpected.html#fixing-duplicate-errors,
but I was NOT getting duplicate errors. That only happened once though.
I'm running with debug level 2, I can provide those logs too, when it
happens on master I see something like this:

That's when the first warning shows up, during rule loading, at least
what I've seen so far.
The point of the whole setup was that any IP doing mischief on an agent
is to be blocked on master from accessing anything.
Lengthy answer, I know, sorry for that, just trying to give you as much
detail as I can. If I can help with some other info please tell me,
otherwise I'll have to move to local installs I suppose and block on
that machine only.
