well, according to the wikipedia article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_filesystem

/opt Contains locally installed software. Originated in System V 
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNIX_System_V>, which has a package manager 
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_manager> that installs software to 
this directory (one subdirectory per package)
