FYI, I thougt that I had the same, a faulty 3G iPhone. Massive battery power drain, random start of music, warm back body. It happen that I did keep the earplugs connected all the time even during charge time. I did break the earplugs by stepping inadvertently on one of them and I started to use it without the it and it seems that the battery life went back to normal.
It would be interesting to see if this behavior can be replicated.
