The river offered the best possible option at the time:  land on the water or 
drop in on an urban zone. He saved lives both onboard and on the ground...

Is there *any* precedence for such a safe landing on water for a major
commercial aircraft? I'd always heard that survivable water landings were
quite rare and unusual for large aircraft... certainly in recent times the
only crash landings on water I can recall were all devastating.

I know small private aircraft can do it, though even then the damage is
often extensive.
