While I am generally pro-immigration, and think that
immigration in general is good for the Australian economy, if what he
is actually doing is mostly removing specific professions from the
skilled migrant program when employment levels start to fall in those
areas, that seems reasonable. If he is cutting other categories of
migration (reuniting families, spouse visas, political asylum, etc)
then it seems more than a bit mean-spirited.
In general, immigration policy under the Howard government
was an area in which the right acted like complete wankers, committee
serious crimes, did massive damage to Australias human rights record,
displayed massive incompetence, and generally acted like callous
soulless villains at best, incompetent malicious trolls at worst. I
actually believe Peter Reith should be in jail over the SIEV-X
affair, and have barely less hatred for the various other immigration
ministers. But so far, the Rudd government seems cautiously
reasonable, and to be gradually rehabilitating our shocking previos
policies.
        Cheers
                David
