I think they all "experience" pain, in that it triggers a response; flee, defend, attack, etc. This study identified the threshold of pain (electric current) required to cause a crab to leave its shell. The researchers then applied a level of current beneath the threshold and observed that when offered a new shell, only those crabs that had been previously shocked sought out the new shell. This demonstrates that the crabs remembered the unpleasantness and even though they might otherwise endure it, were compelled to seek to avoid the pain. I'd be very surprised if plants were found to experience anything more than a basic "stimulus and response" mechanism. The end of the article sounds like it's trending towards PETA territory. "More research is needed in this area where a potentially very large problem is being ignored," said Elwood. "Legislation to protect crustaceans has been proposed but it is likely to cover only scientific research. Millions of crustacean are caught or reared in aquaculture for the food industry." Won't someone think of the crustaceans!? -- -- -- arno s hautala /-\ [email protected] -- -- _______________________________________________ OSX-Nutters mailing list | [email protected] http://lists.tit-wank.com/mailman/listinfo/osx-nutters List hosted at http://cat5.org/
