Obama:
"This is a time for reflection, not retribution. . . . But at a
time of great challenges and disturbing disunity, nothing will be
gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past.
Our national greatness is embedded in America's ability to right
its course in concert with our core values, and to move forward
with confidence. That is why we must resist the forces that divide
us, and instead come together on behalf of our common future."
Greenwald:
That passage, more than anything else, is the mindset that has
destroyed the rule of law in the U.S. and spawned massive
criminality in our elite class. Accountability for crimes
committed by political leaders (as opposed to ordinary Americans)
is scorned as "retribution" and "laying blame for the past." Those
who believe that the rule of law should be applied to the powerful
as well as to ordinary citizens are demonized as the "forces that
divide us." The bottomless corruption of immunizing political
elites for serious crimes is glorified in the most Orwellian terms
as "a time for reflection," "moving forward," and "coming together
on behalf of our common future."
And in the process destroy what remains of our government?
Retribution is nice,
it's not "retribution"
torture has always been against the law
but one does not cut off their nose to spite their face. There are
times when it is better to forgive, or perhaps take a step back and
look at what must be done without a quick knee jerk reaction. It
was quick reactions without thought that put us in this mess imho.
There is no point in prosecuting anyone who may have been involved
if it ends up creating a permanent divide. Someone needs to pay but
let's be smart about who we choose to go after. I am glad Obama has
said he won't go after rank and file. Note he's not said he won't
go after those who made the decisions.
right -
and John Dean said their is precedent for those who followed what they
thought was the law, in good faith - ie: no prosecuting those who
actually did the deeds.
we'll have to see where this goes
