JR Tokai Takes Roomier Maglev Out For A Spin
Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai) has begun test runs of the
MagLev train they plan to use for a high-speed link between Tokyo
and Nagoya.
The sloping front end has been shortened from 23 metres to 15 metres
to create more space for passengers. And one car has been re-designed
with a roomier rectangular shape, replacing the original curved
interior.
For the maiden test run April 3rd, the re-designed MagLev, which
hit 497kph, was on a test track extended to 193km.
The new shape did not affect driving performance, according to JR
Tokai, which plans to begin the Tokyo-Nagoya service in 2025.
The high-speed train will be able to make the run in around forty
minutes, slicing an hour off the time the trip currently takes.
