I don't think there's been very much of an American Press at all for  
close on thirty years.  The press is neither free nor vigorous here,  
at least not in the traditional sense. The press in the US is meek and  
corporate. It's only tasks that could even vaguely be called vigorous  
are its varied pursuits of so-called celebrities and 'entertainment  
news.'

The era in which two young reporters could take down the Presidency of  
the US are long LONG gone.  In today's press, that story would never  
have gotten published. And if it HAD gotten published, it would never  
have gained traction.
