I think there is a great deal of naiveté on the part of the left wing
liberals who insist that everything has to come out, everyone has to
be punished, and that the new administration be as vindictive as they
feel. Yes, I'd LOVE to see Bush/Cheney brought up on war crimes
charges and imprisoned for the rest of their lives for what they've
done. I also think that if that did happen, it would be a crippling
blow to the US. (I'm still in favor of it, crippling blow be damn.

The only thing in Obama's speech that is really objectionable is his
saying "a small number of individuals" since we know that is *not*
true. dozens, if not hundreds of people in many locations, not just
Abu Ghraib.
The issues are a lot deeper than most people want to admit. It's not a
matter of 'embarrassing' to the US, it is potentially very dangerous,
not just to American soldiers, but to any Americans overseas.
Yes, Turley has some good points, but Obama is in a very tough spot
here. On the one hand, he obviously wants this information out. On the
other hand it is also obvious that he is getting a lot of advice
telling him that it is a bad idea. He's found those arguments
compelling at this point. I don't know who is making those arguments,
and I don't agree with them, but I understand them.
I also think that Turley's point that the Administration *wants* to be
*forced* to release these photos is likely to be exactly right. The
photos *will* be released, and it is quite possible that one of the
arguments in favor of the administration withholding them is exactly
to have a clear and definitive legal ruling.
