A second question--what size solar collector panel do I need?
(OK. I guess that'll depend on latitude, longitude, type of panel,
weather. But still, a rough idea would be helpful--I'm in Manchester,
Maryland, USA--just outside of Washington D.C.)
I told my father-in-law I'd get the answer before dinner. EST. Any
helpful suggestions?

If you can afford the up front expense then being able to live "off
grid" is desirable from my point of view too.
Preparing for the zombie hordes etc...
Have you looked into wind? Depending on how close to the coast the
farm is, you might be able to supplement the solar power with wind.
Wind can work at night too. <wink>
In any case, it is a cool idea.
