I have to say that LaTeX may seem daunting, but is pretty quick to get
up and running.  There will be the fine details that lead into longer
searching or tweaks, but overall I was able to get the majority of my
formatting done quite quickly.

If you take that route, you can use any multi-user, network text
editor (SubEthaEdit) and each user can compile locally.
