I am not familiar with L8 images. For the Take5 data, level 1C is already in TOA reflectance, so you don't need the physical gain. If you are using OTB at the library level, you can start at the point where you go from TOA to surface reflectances (http://www.orfeo-toolbox.org/SoftwareGuide/SoftwareGuidech12.html#x38-21300012.2, otbReflectanceToSurfaceReflectanceImageFilter). If you are using the optical calibration application, I think that you can't skip the luminance to TOA step, so you will not be able to do it (can someone else confirm?).
