The search area is determined by the maximum shift you expect to have between the 2 images. The window for the local metric depends on the metric itself (MI needs larger windows than correlation) and the image content (amount of contrast and texture). For correlation, radiuses between 3 and 7 (7x7 and 15x15 pixels) are typical.
