I think it should be defined as The value of a given pixel in the spatial image is "the distance in image space (in x,y pixel units) to the pixel of the nearest mode in feature space"
that is, the mode that corresponds to a given pixel is defined in feature space, the pixel that corresponds to that mode is located in the image, and the distance from the given pixel to the mode pixel is measured in image space and saved to the spatial image as x,y values of the x,y layers. Not clear though how the spatial threshold works in step 2. If the spatial threshold is exceeded, what happens to the pixel in step2? is it labelized to a new patch? to a spatially closer mode? left as isolated?
