Jimmie-

Applause to you! I am not at UE therapist either! I am an occupational
therapist with a M.S. degree that works with adolescents and adults with
autism. I assist them to transition into adulthood and employment. I have
always been angered that OT's are referred to only work in the rehab
setting. There are so many opportunities out there for us, we just have to
create them. I did not want to work in inpatient rehab for that purpose, so
I found another realm that I was interested in and pursued this agency. I
assist these individuals in the areas of vocation, leisure, social, and
daily living skills just to name a few. I am proud to say that I am an
Occupational Therapist, not an UE therapist.

While attending a continuing education course, I was confronted with the
opinion that an occupational therapist's role is to address "upper extremity
concerns." To make things worse the course instructor, an OT with over 20
years of experience, was the culprit. Don't worry though, I did take the
offender to task for her lack of understanding of her own profession. It is
scary that people actually have this opinion. And to make things worse, are
telling others, so as to corrupt their fragile little minds. I for one am
not an UE therapist. While I can treat an individual with an UE disorder, I
also quite frequently treat individuals with disorders of their spine or
lower extremities. I work along PTs in an outpatient clinic with no
similarites between what I do in comparison to their treatment. In fact, my
best referral source is a PT. He is readilly willing to refer because he
understands the!
