Ron and group,
In my limited experience I'd have to say the issue here is not so much OT vs
PT because of fundamental differences between the ways of working of the
two, rather it's more that PT has a higher public profile....this may or
may not be a function of the more wholistic "meaning" based aspects of OT
interventions. Fortunately the levels of tension that exist in the United
States as a result of your Insurance Industry dominated health system, are
not as evident here (at least not so much in my area of work : disability
services). In the Community Health System, and in some hospitals here, the
OTs and PTs will where necessary/possible swap roles and occasionally even
perform joint assessment and treatment sessions. From speaking with my
friends working in these areas, I understand that these models of practice
work well, as the health services resources are utilised more flexibly...and
obviously interdisciplinary communication would be enhanced. Do any other
members have experience of effective partnership type working arrangements
with PT or other allied health and Occupational Therapists?
David
