Actually, socialization into a profession occurs as part of education, in and out of
school. As students progress through a professional program, such as OT and PT, they
learn through what they read, through role models such as practitioners, and yes, even
faculty, what it means to be an OT or PT. They learn by having to explain themselves
to patients and families who ask questions. It doesn't happen in the first couple of
semesters, but by the end of their classroom and clinical experiences, they learn how
to simply define their role. The best way to learn is to have to explain yourself to
lay persons as well as other professionals who aren't familiar with your profession or
who have a misconception of what you do. I used to look forward to those
opportunities when standing in the hospital elevator, carrying a long handled sponge
or reacher. Instead of staring at the doors, waiting for them to open, I would look
doctors straight in the eyes and say who I was and what I did. At the Career Fair
just I attended at TSU, four students were present at our booth. They learned first
hand how to explain OT to high school students, guidance counselors, and parents. The
senior OT student was pretty fluent, I must say with pride. The juniors needed more
modeling from me, then they took over. Like anything else, we can whine about how we
are misunderstood, or we can be assertive and tell people what we want them to know.
And show others how to do the same.

Mr. Lehman,

Since there is so much confusion about defining OT and PT, do you have a quick and
easy definition of both that students and practicing therapists can use to explain
each discipine as well as the difference between the two without being too vague such
as AOTA's slogans such as "Skills for the job of living."?

I am a COTA who works in a skilled nursing/subacute rehab facility and I feel that
overall, public awareness of OT is improving. After the OTR/L has evaluated the
patient and the patient is added to my caseload, I try to give a good explanation of
what occupational therapy is, and I try to help the patient define their occupations.
For the most part, in this setting, basic ADL's, basic kitchen/home management/DME
recommendations and training are addressed and then they are out the door to their
home or assisted living facility.
