I know exactly how you feel about this because I have been getting these e-mails and probably all of us. But I have been getting other *actual* listserv e-mails as well, though not too many of them. I think one of the recent ones was from Ron telling us that he is going to be moving the OTList to another website and that we would all be automatically re-subscribed, and if that did not happen he would re-subscribe us individually.
Anyhow, I think the spam (junk e-mail) about all the wierd topics in the world coming to us, there is not much we can do to screen it out unless we (or perhaps Ron or someone else on the list knows of another reliable way) buy a reliable spam screening software. And even then I cannot see it as being 100% effective in screening out every piece of spam, though I could be wrong about its effectiveness.
On the other hand I also believe that if we opt out of the list by leaving the group that we are giving up the internet to all the people sending out the spam and and the junk e-mail. This is not very different from giving up what we do as professionals simply because there are commercial business people out there with nothing but profit as their motive claiming or pretending they are healthcare providers. The upshot of leaving the group is giving in to all the wrong people and reasons on the internet. And I am convinced that if we do this as a consistent practice that there will be no place on the internet safe from spam. I am not about to give up my rights on the internet. So by leaving the list because of *junk e-mail* you would actually be promoting it indirectly.
In my opinion what we need to do is to press the delete button when we come across spam and clear out the trash on a regular basis. So please do not be weirded out, because if you are then ultimately you will be weirded out of the internet.
