Hi Jason, This is a question that the Islington Learning Disabilities Team did some extensive research into in the 90's when people were moving out of asylums. It remains a hot topic for debate. In my opinion it is down to access. Can the person access the service without any special assistance? If so then there is no problem. However, if the person may be denied access then perhaps it is appropriate for them to access specialist services. One example is a client who was having gynacological problems and was unable to talk to the doctor (GP) about it at the right level for her. She asked her learning disability nurse to attend appointments with her and to explain what the doctor was saying in her own terms. This was successful from the doctor and the client point of view!
