I belong to several listservs and the topic of group activities for people with eating disorders has come up. Almost every response has recommended activities having to do with nutrition, planning menus, and eating. As a new OTR I don't want to jump in if I am totally off base, but having recently taken mental health classes and spent many weeks studying for the registration exam, the information is fresh in my mind. I have been told repeatedly, and it is even in the study guides, that you should totally steer away from anything having to do with food, nutrition, and body image with these people. My understanding is that most people with eating disorders are very well versed in food and nutrition, to the point of being gourmet cooks... which is how they hide the fact that they aren't actually eating the food they are preparing or know so much about. It bothers me to see someone being advised to do so many meal based activities when I have been taught to steer away from them. Am I off base?
