Hi Lara,

You might try contacting the NY OT association or AOTA (AOTA.org) for
information. Advance for OT is a magazine with a website where you can explore
job openings.

Speaking from experience, OT is a profession that took a considerable hit back
in 1999 with the passage of the Balanced Budget Act. Many businesses were shut
down and many lost their jobs. The profession has recovered some, but it is
not near to the job outlook status it previously enjoyed. With Medicare being
the primary payer for OT service, we will continue to have the possibility of
further problems regarding payment for OT services in the future. Basically
there is still the requirement to cap OT under Medicare B at the beginning of
2006. This is unless Congress decides to again put the cap on moratorium or
God forbid finally get rid of this piece of shoddy legislation. OT is not a
qualifying service under home care, which means we are at the whim of other
professions regarding when and how we can enter a case. There is also talk of
a home health co-pay, which would undoubtedly hit the therapies hard as I can
see patients limiting therapy visits to save money for needed nursing and aide
visits.

Additionally, OT is the only of the rehabilitation professions with a identity
crisis. In that I mean that OTs tend to have difficulty defining themselves
and often practice and speak of themselves in ways which confuse the public.

It can be a rewarding career choice nonetheless. It provides you the
opportunity to touch lives in a way that other rehabilitation professions
cannot.

Jimmie

Subject: [OTlist] considering OT or OTA career

I'm relocating to NYC soon and was considering a career change in OT or as
an OTA. However, I can't seem to find many jobs available, and I'd certainly
like to work after getting the degree!

Where are the career/job websites for this profession? What are the starting
salaries in the NY area?

Thanks for your help,
Lara
