Collaboration and compellation occurs best on a level playing field.
There is almost nothing that is level between OT and PT. Just look at
home health. We are only involved if recommended by PT/RN. What is a
home heath OT going to do when they think OT is indicated but the PT
doesn't! We'll they can rant and rave, but if the PT/RN doesn't
recommend it, then it probably won't happen. What's level about that!

Any of us working in a for-profit system should understand that
competition is the name of the game. While the below quoted comments
suggest that competition is a bad thing! I think that this is hardly the
case. Competition drives people and progress forward. From before we
ever went to OT school, most of us competed for limited resources. It
may have been resources such as: limited applications spots, need-based
financial assistance, housing, etc. Once in school, we competed for
grades and accolades at graduation. And now that we are out in the the
'real world', some suggest that competition stops! Hardly! It just gets
more competitive because the stakes are higher!

Every where we turn, there's competition:

      APTA wants direct access
State organization are rewriting their laws to expand coverage
No home health initial OT services
No CORF coverage required for OT
      OT not covered by insurance

Also, I believe that most U.S. therapists work in limited resource
settings. That primary limiting resource is money, in the the form of
third-party reimbursement. It' a simple fact that multiple entities
competing for limited resources yields competition! It's a dog-eat-dog
world and while we can call our PT working partners our "friends", I
assure you that when the rubber hit the road, friendship is out the
window and professional survival and competition is in!

All of these and many more represent competition between OT and PT!

How about this:

It's all about competition to provide our clients with the most
independence we can offer!!!
