Ann's advice is right on. Additionally a pillow under the arm in the car, extra pillows in the bed, resting the whole arm on the table or desk - elbow should be at least an inch in from the edge of the surface etc. The trick is to support the weight of the arm so there is no 'drag' on the shoulder. Depending on the height of the individual and of table surfaces or armrests it may be necessary to have some extra padding for height. I am personally still recovering from a humeral fracture through the shoulder joint capsule. I've learned to support my arm at an appropriate height to minimise pain. If the height is off - too high or too low - there will be back pain over time.
