Hello all, I would like to direct the attention of everyone to an article in Advance for OT's May 16th issue. The article is in the Classroom Clinic section by Barbara Chandler, MOT, OTR. It reflects a discussion we have had on this list before. That being the restriction of the profession by certain practitioners, payer sources, and corporate entities to biomechanical intervention. This is discussed within the context of school based practice, but the underlying references remain true to other O.T. practice areas as well.
In the article Ms. Chandler writes regarding a report from a fieldwork student in a school based setting, "the focus in this part of a large school district was only on motor skills. The occupational therapists do not address any issues that are not motorically based." She goes on to postulate, "How may other students are enculturated into practices that are not 'best' - that even voluntarily restrict the scope of the profession, and most probably deny needed services to students?" She later states, "If we consider only motor abilities, what kind of therapists are we saying we are?" and then adds, "You are not motor therapists."
