Since you brought it up....I'll mention something I read today.

Today, I ran across an AHA Stoke Assoc. magazine. One of the articles was
written by an individual who had a stroke. She was discouraged by her
occupational therapy because while in rehab, she continuously asked her
therapist to work on her arm and hand. She was told by her therapist that
functional return of her affected side was not likely. This patients
interpretation was that since there may not be any change then the OT was not
willing to work on what the patient desired the most.

Once this patient ran out of therapy, she found that the YMCA had individuals
(trainers I guess) that would work with her on her hand/arm for $8 to $9 per
hour. In the end she is most grateful to these individuals who were willing to
address her desires. She did state that her changes haven't been all that she
hoped.

This is a good example of how our patients perceive their results are just as
important as the actual results. Personally, I get discouraged too. My hope is
that this is a rare patient experience but truthfully, I've seen this more
often than I'd like.

Just my two cents,  Angie
