This is for folks doing research: UPDATE ON CURRENT CAHMI PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
THE DATA RESOURCE CENTER FOR CHILD AND ADOLESCENT HEALTH (DRC): Enhancing and Stimulating the Use of National Data Sets (www.childhealthdata.org) The purpose of the Data Resource Center on Child and Adolescent Health (DRC) is to support, expand and expedite the public use of the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs (NS-CSHCN) and the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). The DRC website gives users direct access to data results from the NS-CSHCN and NSCH at the national, state and regional levels. Real time technical assistance by email or telephone in combination with web-based resources facilitate the use of these data to inform, stimulate and track improvements in child health outcomes and health care and community based services. The DRC is supported by the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau, which also sponsors the NSCH and NS-CSHCN. What's New and What's Coming The newly developed Data Resource Center homepage www.childhealthdata.org serves as gateway to both the currently available national surveys and other datasets that will be added in the future. The DRC homepage allows users to easily navigate between the surveys and access information common to both. We also launched the DRC online portal to the 2003 National Survey of Children's Health www.nschdata.org. Results from the NSCH are presented in the same resource-rich and easy to use format developed by CAHMI for the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs www.cshcndata.org portal. The 2003 NSCH includes data for over 100,000 children ages 0-17 on a range of topics related to child and family health, including child and parent health status, access to and use of health care services, health insurance coverage, family relationships, developmental and child care issues, school attendance and activities, neighborhood characteristics and much more. The survey provides national, state and regional level population-based prevalence estimates for these topics. The DRC is continuously evolving to meet the needs of state, family and many other key audiences for the NS-CSHCN and NSCH data. Recent additions include new data search options and a new charting feature allowing results to be displayed as bar graphs or pie charts. We plan to incorporate the new NSCH and NS-CSHCN datasets as they become available. The release of the 2005 NS-CSHCN data is expected in Fall 2007. Work is already underway by CAHMI to ensure the timely integration of these data into the online DRC search tool.
