1. When does your NBCOT certification expire?
The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
is the national governing body responsible for credentialing
Occupational Therapists (OTR) and Occupational Therapy Assistants
(OTA).In order to maintain current certification as an OTR or OTA,
therapists must meet all NBCOT continuing education (CE) requirements.
A total of thirty-six (36) professional development units beginning
and throughout a three year cycle are required.These units can be
earned through a variety of professional development activities
including online courses. A maximum of 36 hours can be obtained by
taking online programs at www.OnlineCE.com.
If your last renewal was in 2003 and you are on a 3 year renewal
cycle, your certification may be up for renewal. If so, you will need
to complete your PDU's by December 31, 2006. If you still need
PDU'sdon't wait until the last minute. Avoid the hassle and log on
now.
2. When does your state license expire?
In addition to your NBCOT certification, you must also renew your
individual state license in order to continue to practice. This is the
time of yearwhen many OT and OTA's need to renew their license and
meet any CEU requirements. Visit our "State Approvals" page in order

Remember - If your individual state Board does not require CEU, you
will still need to satisfy NBCOT CE requirements in order to use the
credential OTR or OTA as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational
Therapy Assistant in your state.
Do you know when your CE cycle ends?
If you are an OT or OTA licensed in one of the states listed below,
you may have CEU's due in the next 6 months:
SOUTH DAKOTA, WEST VIRGINIA, OKLAHOMA, NEW MEXICO, ALABAMA, KANSAS,
MAINE, RHODE ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA
Keep in mind that your license may also be due according to birthdate
so this list is not inclusive.
3. Remember that Georgia Now Accepts Online CE
The Georgia State Board of Occupational Therapy requires each licensed
OT and OTA to complete continuing education. A minimum twenty-four
(24) hours of continuing education is required for renewal. Of the
twenty-four (24), no more than eight (8) may be in self-study; no more
than four (4) in the area of general continuing education; and two (2)
of the hours must be in the ethics of occupational therapy practice.Up
to 4 hours may be obtained through web-based courses.
