I have repeatedly told my facility that I would be interested in doing research
and have some experience in another work environment. The other work place,
however, was a university-based hospital. At the community hospital where I am
currently employed, we are just struggling to keep OT a viable service. The
priority has always been patient care and productivity. Research is not
encouraged nor any other non-billable activity. It's too bad, that unless one
is connected with a university, there are no real opportunities for
participating in actual research.

That is not to say, though that we cannot help in research efforts, i.e., when
requests come for participating in a survey via the internet or mail, we should
always make the effort. It usually takes less than 15 minutes and does (albeit
not directly performing the research) contribute to research efforts.
