My opinion only: I will disagree with it being called "compensatory"
devices. Recent research is showing neuroplasticity or brain rewiring
occurs after repetitive self initiating and self engaging activities occur.
The exciting part of this is giving hope to pt's even post stroke 23+ years.

These devices hand mentor, Rupert, and even Saeboflex are designed to
discourage non-learned use and encourage function to be carried over to
movements used during ADL's. They are not designed to be used 24-7 or as
compensatory devices, but used to enhance the home exercise program and
therefore, care over to daily activities. Also, the hand mentor and
Saeboflex assist with decreasing spasticity so normal active movement can be
facilitated. Why not latch onto the new technology? If we don't, others
will. Also, many of these new technologies make pt's progress faster which
is what our payers are asking for and also doesn't allow for plateaus
happening so quick. This is rehabilitation therapy.
