Hay Emily,
I think everyone goes through ups and downs in any profession, but I don't
think that it is OT as such that is the 'problem'. It is usually the politics
and stress from dealing with non-client directed work that causes the
'discomfort' (at least that's my opinion).
Personally I love working and interacting with children as an OT. There is no
greater feeling of satisfaction than seeing the difference that you can make in
someone's life by a few suggestions/recommendations and a bit of 'hands-on'
work... the feeling that you get from seeing a face light up when a child who
constantly struggled and failed at tasks suddenly succeeds! THAT is what OT is
about - not the paperwork or politics!
Unfortunately OT's are notoriously bad at blowing their own trumpets and
letting others know what we are all about. It never ceases to amaze me how
many people still don't know what OT is (including other health professionals)
and those that do, tend to only know about one aspect of OT. Other professions
have invested the effort in ensuring that the public know what they do and the
service that they have to offer.
Hope this helps
Veronica
