My lovely wife and I were watching Sense and Sensibility they other
night and I heard a word we are all very familiar with. But it was used
in a way that is very uncommon to most of us. In case you haven't
guessed, the word is: OCCUPATION. Here's the scene.

One of the characters is deathly ill. A family "friend" has driven her
to the families home. As he impatiently waits, he turns to the sister
and pleads for an occupation, lest he go mad. He wasn't looking for a
paid job, he was looking for meaningful engagement.

Our professional title causes us more grief simply because "occupation"
is not longer used as when our profession was founded. If common usage
of occupation was "meaningful engagement", our title would tell people
what we do!

Anyway, I think it's "neat" to hear occupation being used how it was
many years ago.
