Ron:
It really is about exposure to the professions and opportunity for minorities
who have limited avenues based on circumstances. That simple. Nothing more or
less. If it wasn't for the show Dirty Jobs, who would have thought that there
were so many dirty jobs??? :-)

I don't think David is going after equal representation. Actually, here in the
Philadelphia area, the population of minorities in the therapy schools is equal
to the general population.

In my experiences with the OT programs in the city, they are more interested in
increasing enrollment with qualified candidates versus considering the race of
the students. Unqualified candidates can ruin your program stats and bring down
the prestige of the department. In a field where therapy is consistently on the
hot jobs list in HR departments, I don't think race matters when trying to fill
any vacancy because there aren't enough therapists to go around anyway.

Ron, in my humble experiences, I have not seen race play a role in the field of
OT when filling slots into a program or hiring for an OT position.
Now, on the other hand, I have seen gender play a pivotal role in the selection
process.

David,

There seems to be an assumption that there should be equal
representation of blacks, whites browns. Personally, I don't
subscribe to that. However, what I want is equal representation of males!
<smile>

The reason why there aren't more black OT's is because there are less
black OT applicants. Why are there fewer black applicants? I don't
know, maybe for the same reason there are few male OT applicants; OT
just doesn't appeal to them.

In my opinion, if you take an equally qualified black applicant
compared with an equally qualified white applicant, the black
applicant is more likely to be accepted; if for no other reason,
simply because they are black. IF this happens, and the other student
is rejected because of their race, hasn't the black applicant received
preferential treatment based on skin color and isn't that illegal?

Ron
