To Ron and the List,
OT: It's a Wonderful Life!
This list is great because it is such a frank and honest discusssion of the
issues. It is important that we understand eachother as OTs because we work in
such a wide variety of clinical settings with differing challenges and
frustrations.
While we do have mixture of the good OT and bad OT practices, it seems
like people want concrete examples of good ole 'occupation" in practice. At my
place of work (SNF) we have a community re-entry program where we take 3 or 4
people shopping at the grocery store and then we cook a small meal. We have
animal assisted therapy sessions which is a lot of fun for people. Of course
there is times when it is hard to to do a lot of ADLs (self care sessions) but
if you pick and choose you can get the right treament done witht he right
people at the right stage in there rehab. We frequently do home evaluation and
associated family training training and equiipment recommending.
We have a washer and dryer so people can come down and do their own
laundry, fold it and transport it back to there room. We have an outdoor walk
way with steps, ramps, uneven surfaces to practice community mobility. We have
practice bathroom for shower and tub transfers, we have a mock apartment for
practice of household cleaning, meal prep.
I have an outpatient who is visually impaired and CVA L hemi and she's
getting back to using her left hand for reading braille and printing braille as
part of her treatment.
I think about 80% of my patients go home to their prior level of function
or at least go home, others we find places for ALF, SNF. We are often very busy
and sometimes too busy but hey we are all employed and making a positive
contribution to society. We spend time with our patients, more quality time
than most doctors and nurses. ,
So take a look around at the world of business and healthcare and the
economy, even though we're misunderstood and often ill defined, our profession
has such great potential, opportunities and rewards. It's all what you make of
it.
Sincerely,
Brent
