Hi Everyone;

I would like to introduce a subject which might get a bit of a chain of
feedback going. I am part of a movement to offer an alternative name to
qualifying OTs and OTAs.

We are a membership organization called the American League of Functional
Therapists. We have the trademarked the collective marks and membership
marks of:

   1. Registered Functional Therapist RFT(TM)
   2. Registered Functional Therapy Associate(TM)

As a membership organization we will ensure that the members qualify under
the qualifications as written in our bylaws and as presented on our website
www.FunctionalTherapist.org <http://www.functionaltherapist.org/>. We also
have been doing well increasing recognition and searchability of our blog at
www.RegisteredFunctionalTherapist.Blogspot.com<http://www.registeredfunctionaltherapist.blogspot.com/>.

Please take a look at the blog, become a follower of it to see what we are
talking about. If you have more interest please contact me at
[email protected].

The discussions on our Blog look at challenges in using our name, word
origins and implications, projects we are working on and generally what we
are about. For instance, a PT I have worked with for 9 years (and who has
worked with OTs for 25+ years) told me she always thought it was to do with
jobs. That was today after I told her about the effort ALOFT was doing to
provide an alternative name. She said, "Well, it seemed to make sense, you
need to have your shoes on before you can go to work.". We work in an acute
care hospital with many geriatric and retired patients. If someone I work
shoulder to shoulder with... even doing co-treats occasionally, doesn't know
what we do how can we expect John Q. Public to?

So how about you? Are some of the challenges you face due to our limited
name recognition. Do you think we could get any benefit from being able to
use an additional and alternative name? Again, we are not trying to change
the law or have your license say RFT. We are a membership organization
promoting OT services under an alternative name.

I hope you will check us out.

Thank you so much for your dedication to OT,

Ed Kaine, OTR, RFT
