You can use a PostgreSQL, SAPDB, MSSQL, ODBC, ... you just need a perl 
DBI/DBD driver.

The Kernel/Config.pm should look like this:
[...]
    $Self->{CustomerUser} = {
        Module => 'Kernel::System::CustomerUser::DB',
        Params => {
            # if you want to use an external database, add the
            # required settings
            DSN => 'DBI:odbc:yourdsn',
            User => 'user',
            Password => 'pass',
            Table => 'customer_user',
        },
        # customer uniq id
        CustomerKey => 'login',
[...]
