We have OTRS 2.2.7 running in production on a a 2.8GHz Xeon with Linux version 2.6.18-6-686 (Debian 2.6.18.dfsg.1-18etch6 stripped to the bone, with no X enviroment) with 1GB RAM and it's very fast, using mod_perl2. BTW, I haven't used apt-get for the installation: I did it manually.

Its 32-bit, 2GB of RAM, SAS disks, 2.8Ghz CPU, etc. Is there a recommended distro I can try that's easy out of the box to get this going?
