That was the reason. I then had problems with the error message "utf8 "\xFC" does not map to Unicode" but got this mostly solved with http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg26009.html I additionally had to edit /opt/otrs/Kernel/Config/Files/ZZZAuto.pm as that file contained German umlauts.
