Have you considered registering a media type to the IANA for .ots proof

I guess, application/opentimestamps-proof would make sense?

It would be in the Vendor Tree as it is the default choice, so it could be something line application/vnd.opentimestamps.proof, or application/vnd.opentimestamps.OTS-proof, etc.

In the registration form, there is an important area for security considerations: are there potentially harmful things that a malicious sender could cause client doing, using a specially crafted .ots file? I am quite naive in the field, but for instance what if URLs in the file would point to malicious servers?

More to the point of my suggestion, there is also the Magic number(s) section. I suppose in your case it would be 00 4f 70 65 6e 54 69 6d 65 73 74 61 6d 70 73 00 00 50 72 6f 6f 66 (.OpenTimestamps..Proof) ?

Have a nice day,
