Ok, my desktop mysqld was too old. I've started work on the shipped init
script and the debian/ubuntu one.

Bug description:
Is it possible to add "configtest" option to rc script to validate the
configuration file without having to restart mysqld.
I've seen similar functionality in some rc scripts (apache comes to mind).
