I'd like to add a vote for this as well, binary tarballs would be very helpful. Sometimes it is necessary to sidestep the packaging system or install into a hosting environment where you may not have full access to the underlying OS.

We currently use mysql's tarballs, and the lack thereof has made our transition to ourdelta more difficult than necessary. We made a script to extract from rpm via rpm2cpio, but that's a hack -- the defaults are all off.
