Have you checked the helper assigned to open word documents in your email
program as it sounds like that is the thing which is setting the file type
(as Word 5). Check your Internet Config control Panel and edit the helper
application for ".doc" files to Appleworks 6.

Incidentally a couple of other little shareware apps that I like are quite
useful for this type of problem. "Snitch" is a more informative Get Info
app, which allows you to change creator/type on the fly. And "OpenUsing"
contextual menu module is a great way to force certain programs to be the
one used to open a given file. Both available at
