Hi all, Thought I'd add my .02c
> >Unlike the SE/30 it lacks both the PDS slot and the ridiculous RAM >>capacity, but is otherwise the same I think. Ok, maybe the SE/30 also >>wins on prestige value too. I have both (actually, I have more Classics than I can poke a stick at, anyone want one?...), and the SE/30 is a fantastic machine. The build quality is simply unbelievable. I use one here as a network fileserver/ internet router/ DHCP server. It just goes, and goes, and goes......... Picked it up for $20 from the Tip shop. Put a bigger drive, more RAM and an ethernet card in it, and away it went. >SE/30 is faster - 32-but data bus. The Classic II/LCII have the hobbled >16-bit data path. Oh yes, it's incredible the difference that makes. Forget processor speed, it's the bus width and speed that has made the most immediate and noticeable differences in performance as far as I am concerned. The processors got fast, too, but what use is a fast processor if you can't move the data around fast enough to begin with? >The quality of (probably pre-Amelio, maybe pre-Jobs II) Macs was >incredible. See my comment above. ANY Wintel machine from the same era as my SE/30 (1989-90) would have failed terminally long ago. On a related note, has anyone else noticed what we're beginning to call "the LC problem" around here? LC series machines in the pizza box cases (LC - LC 475) are beginning to have really flaky power supplies. You turn them on and the hard drive spins up, and then nothing. Totally black screen. You can solve it by simply attaching a thin fan to the top of the processor. I suspect that the power supply sends a spike through the processor on startup, which causes localised overheating, and thus the lack of action. If you don't have a fan, you can solve the problem by leaving it on (with the blank screen) for 5 minutes and then rebooting. Hence my hunch about power supply stability being at the heart of the problem....
