I do this at home with 'software' basestation iMac.

you have to have the internet going to use the 'sharing' systems pref...
just tick the box for how you are going to do it and your away.

I only have modem but it works via the airport system and at same time with
cross over cable to a non airport equipped Mac...

quite a smart system in 10.3
