G'day Jim,

Could be your hard drive on the way out ... this may account for crashing (Virtuall memory errors).

I'm running a similar setup (iMac DV - 450MHz, 256Mb RAM, Sys 9.2.2 & OS X), and have had a HD die on me. It didn't give installation problems, but that could be VM or checksum related.

Spend some (but not too much) scheckles - I bought a 80GB HD for $AUS120 (birthday present), and things have gone fine (5400 RPM to 7200 RPM is a bit of a bonus). And - if you can, up the RAM.

But don't go nuts - a new eMac is just a tad over a grand now. Do some maths - you may find the speed/memory/HD equation will suggest it's time to upgrade.

Just my AUS 2 cents worth (plus GST).

Mike

Subject: Is my iMac dying?

 Hi,

I have a slot load CRT iMac (500MHz, 64Mb RAM, System 9.1) which
has been giving trouble with freezing when the kids play games. I've tried to do a software restore, eventually electing to go back to the erasing the disk option, but this fails right at the
end with a checksum error.

If I use the software install disk it starts the install process
but then comes up with "error reading installation tome".

I've also tried to install from a retail pack System 9.0, and from
a System 9.2.2 EMac disk, always with the same error reading the
 installation tome.

I wondered if the RAM may have been the problem and so reseated it
after cleaning with electrical contact cleaning fluid and canned
 air - no joy.

Perhaps it was the CD drive, so I did a swap with a known working
slot-load CD drive - still no joy.

I connected an external Firewire DVD drive and tried to start up
holding down the F key - still no joy.

Before I have apoplexy, is there something I'm forgetting about?
 > Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
